Sciatica vs. Low Back Pain: Key Differences and Stretches for Relief
Is your low back pain actually Sciatica? Many people use the terms interchangeably, but while they can overlap, they’re not the same thing. Understanding the difference between the two can help you take the right steps toward relief — whether that means home stretches, lifestyle changes, or professional Chiropractic care.
In 2025, over 80% of adults experience low back pain, with sciatica affecting up to 40% of those cases, per recent NIH data! If that is you, we would love to help! Research Here.
In this article, you’ll learn:
- The difference between general low back pain and sciatica
- Common causes and symptoms of each
- Simple, safe stretches you can try at home for relief
- How Chiropractic care addresses the root cause — not just the symptoms
What is Low Back Pain?
Low back pain is one of the most common health complaints worldwide. Nearly everyone experiences it at some point, and it can range from a dull ache to sharp, debilitating discomfort. For many patients, it starts as occasional stiffness and gradually turns into a constant annoyance that interferes with sleep, work, and exercise. Click for research article.
Low Back Pain Causes:
- Muscle strain from lifting, twisting, or overuse
- Poor posture (especially from Anterior Pelvic Tilt)
- Disc degeneration or bulging discs
- Misalignments in the spine or pelvis
- Weak core or tight hip flexors and hamstrings

Symptoms typically stay local — in other words, you feel the discomfort in your lower back itself, sometimes with stiffness or limited range of motion. While many cases resolve with time and movement, recurring or chronic low back pain is often a sign that there’s an underlying imbalance in the spine or supporting muscles that needs to be addressed.
What is Sciatica?
Sciatica is different. It refers specifically to irritation of the sciatic nerve — the longest nerve in the body, running from the lower spine through the hips and down the legs. Unlike generalized back pain, sciatica directly affects the nervous system, which is why the pain often feels sharper, more intense, and harder to ignore. Click for research article.
Sciatica Symptoms:
- Sharp, shooting pain that radiates from the low back or buttock into the leg
- Tingling, burning, or “pins and needles” sensations
- Numbness or weakness in one leg
- Pain that worsens with sitting for long periods or certain movements
When the sciatic nerve is irritated or compressed — often by a herniated disc, spinal misalignment, or narrowing in the spine — the result is not just pain, but also functional issues like muscle weakness or loss of coordination. This is why treating sciatica early is so important!

Sciatica Vs. Low Back Pain: Key Differences
At first glance, these conditions can seem similar. Both can make everyday activities like sitting, standing, or bending uncomfortable. But there are distinct differences that help us identify the root cause.
Low Back Pain |
Sciatica |
|
Location |
Pain stays in the low back area |
Pain radiates down the leg (sometimes to the foot) |
Cause |
Muscle strain, posture, joint irritation |
Nerve irritation (disc, misalignment, or narrowing) |
Symptoms |
Achy, stiff, localized pain |
Sharp, shooting, burning, numbness, tingling |
Relief |
Stretches, strengthening, posture correction |
Decompression, realignment, nerve-focused care |
The key takeaway: low back pain is often muscular or joint-related, while sciatica involves the nerves. This is why Chiropractic treatment can look very different depending on your diagnosis.
Stretches and Exercises for Low Back Pain and Sciatica Relief
Movement is medicine — when done the right way! These stretches and exercises are designed to gently relieve pressure, improve circulation, and strengthen the muscles that protect your spine… I recommend these to almost all of my patients!
What You Can Do at Home Besides Stretching
Stretches are powerful, but they’re just one piece of the puzzle. Small daily habits can make a big difference in preventing pain from coming back. Consistency over time creates change!
Posture Awareness: Keep screens at eye level, avoid slouching, and use lumbar support when sitting.
Movement Breaks: Stand and stretch every 30–45 minutes if you sit for work. Even 2 minutes of movement can reset your spine.
Heat/Ice: Use ice packs for inflammation, heat for tight muscles. Alternate if unsure.
Sleep Support: Choose a mattress that supports the natural curves of your spine and avoid stomach sleeping.
How Chiropractic Care Helps Sciatica and Low Back Pain
Here’s where the difference between temporary relief and long-term results comes in. While stretches and lifestyle changes can ease discomfort (I argue they are necessary for change), they don’t always fix the underlying cause.
Chiropractic care goes deeper by addressing why your pain is happening in the first place. If a spinal misalignment, disc issue, or imbalance is irritating your nerves or straining your muscles, adjustments can restore normal alignment and function!
Chiropractic Benefits:
- Realigns the spine: Corrects misalignments that irritate nerves and strain muscles.
- Reduces pressure on discs and joints: Especially important in sciatica cases where a disc bulge is compressing the nerve.
- Improves nerve function: Restores communication between the brain and body, allowing for better healing and performance.
- Prevents flare-ups: By improving biomechanics, posture, and muscular balance.
Patients often tell us they feel relief after just a few visits. Patients will often notice not just a change in their pain, but also in energy, mobility, and everyday function. When the spine and nervous system function at their best, the whole body benefits!
Research shows that patients with Sciatica who received Chiropractic care relied less on opioids (pain killers) than those who did not receive Chiropractic care! Research Here.
How Chiropractic Helps Sciatica: Real Patient Stories
Two different patient’s stories really stick out to us here at Antignolo Chiropractic. Now we see a lot of patients who suffer from low back pain, whether that is caused from an injury, poor posture, or arthritis. We also have been blessed to help patient’s who suffer from Sciatica. One patient had been suffering from Sciatica for over a year! He actually tried injections, opioids, and did about 3 months of physical therapy. All of these helped but he still wasn’t able to completely get over the Sciatica. He was still having tightness, tingling, and pain starting from the left side of his low back going all the way down to his left foot. He had a previous MRI and then we took X-rays here in the office. He had severe degenerative disc disease (smaller vertebral disc due to degeneration) at his L5/S1 (last vertebrae in the low back). This had caused compression on his Sciatica nerve which was causing his symptoms. After 3 months of consistent Chiropractic care we got him back to 100%! His Sciatica symptoms were gone!
Another patient came to us with severe Sciatica symptoms after moving boxes and packing up his house. He was unable to sleep due to the pain and he had a lot of numbness/tingling going down his leg and into the foot. After a few visits he was sleeping much better and after a few weeks his symptoms reduced by over 90%! His neurologist even recommended surgery but after his treatment plan he was able to avoid spinal surgery (huge win)!
When to See a Professional
Call a Chiropractor or healthcare provider if you experience:
- Pain lasting longer than a few weeks
- Pain radiating below the knee
- Numbness, tingling, or weakness in one or both legs
- Sudden, severe pain after an injury
- Loss of bladder or bowel control (seek emergency care)
The earlier you seek care, the easier it is to prevent long-term damage and restore normal function.

The Bottom Line
Low back pain and Sciatica may share some symptoms, but they’re not the same. Sciatica specifically involves nerve irritation, while low back pain can come from muscles, joints, or posture. The good news? Both can often be improved with the right stretches, movement habits, and Chiropractic care. Don’t let pain control your life. If you’re struggling with low back pain or sciatica, schedule an appointment at Antignolo Chiropractic. Together, we’ll find the cause of your discomfort and build a plan to get you moving — and living — pain-free.
